Spatial Identification and Construction of a Cultural Gene Framework for Former Residences of Historical Figures in Yangzhou

Spatial Identification and Construction of a Cultural Gene Framework for Former Residences of Historical Figures in Yangzhou

Abstract

Former residences of historical figures preserve rich historical and cultural information, possess value for historical research, cultural communication and tourism development, and constitute an important component of the cultural heritage system. Systematically identifying their material components and cultural meanings is essential for effective conservation and heritage transmission. Focusing on 152 former residences of historical figures in Yangzhou and employing spatial information technology and cultural gene identification methods, the work aims to systematically construct the cultural gene framework of these residences. Based on the analysis of cultural gene variation and inheritance, targeted protection and inheritance strategies are proposed. The results show that the spatial distribution of former residences of historical figures in Yangzhou exhibits obvious unevenness, presenting an overall pattern of "concentrated in urban areas and sparse in surrounding regions", with 73% of these former residences located within Yangzhou's historic urban area. 10 elements across three dimensions of spatial layout, architectural character, and cultural attributes jointly constitute the cultural gene framework for former residences of historical figures in Yangzhou. The identified cultural genes encode multiple layers of meaning, including ecological wisdom "aligned with nature", spatial principles of "yin-yang balance", "intergenerational" family ethos, a sense of responsibility "linking family and nation", and an "inclusive cultural disposition". These findings clarify both the material structure and cultural significance of the sites, provide an evidence base for conservation and adaptive use, and offer a transferable approach for the sustainable management of comparable heritage resources.
